Protea cynaroides

Being in a relatively mild climatic area we are able to grow many interesting things outside all the year around with a lot of learning along the way!

The biggest problems we have to overcome our the very high rainfall -  up to 56 inches per year and the winds, these battering south  westerlies are also salt laden further aggravating the situation.

The rain is a problem with the succulents and Southern Hemisphere Proteacea but can be overcome by adding plenty of grit when planting. However every cloud has a silver lining and the Tree Ferns thrive on the high rainfall, if you can keep the wind off them!!

There are many plants that are used in the area that give very good wind breaks. Not all are hardy so check carefully before trying them in your area.

New for this year is the attempt to grow Opuntias. Several varieties are hardy to -15 degrees C. The challenge is to keep the rain of them. I have a few ideas but do not want to put it here until I know if they work or not.
